Peanut Gets Pampered

I won something! This was a first for me. I've filled out my fair share of raffle tickets, realizing it was the donation that mattered. Didn't give it much thought beyond that. Well that changed when the Mary Kay rep told me I was entitled to a free pampering session.

Visions of a make-over danced in my head. Would a facial be the answer to a new outer look? I agreed to accept this 'freebie' and quickly learned nothing comes that easy.

My representative informed me that in addition to the pampering session, I would receive free gifts if I invited some friends to join us in a skin care info session. That didn't seem to be too much of an hardship. I emailed a few people I knew and the very situation that promised stress reduction quickly became one that prompted some wonder. Now I had to recruit people to come over and sit for a sales pitch.

Wow - was I dumb. Mary Kay wanted their email addresses. Really? That's when the freebie didn't seem so free. Mary Kay rep, I probably would've bought make-up had you just sent me a catalogue. I don't need to convince anyone else that they've got bad skin. Even the guise of a free glass of wine seems tainted with the real reason to come -  to be sold on a product anyone can shop for independently.

May Kay lady, I've got nothing against you. I know you're just doing your job. But when you said you wanted to pamper me, you kind of misrepresented yourself.

In all fairness, after I cancelled the skin care presentation, the rep offered to pamper me Saturday morning - to make good on the $15 gift I won.  I told her "I'm too busy taking my dog to the groomer!" A girl has to have her priorities in order, after all.
